UK MPs Voted on Domestic Abuse Legislation But Left Migrant Women Behind

Migrant Women Subject to Domestic Abuse Blocked From Safety!

Despite UK-wide women’s calls to MPs, the UK Parliament have left the migrant women subject to domestic abuse behind. Migrant women are blocked from safety as MPs on 6th July 2020 voted against New Clause 22, by 330 to 207 votes.

“The current version of the Domestic Abuse Bill does not offer adequate protection for all women. Those without secure immigration status who do not have access to public funds find it virtually impossible to access safety and protection if they experience domestic abuse. They only have access to 5.4% of refuge beds, they are often unable to access healthcare, and are often too scared to report abuse to the police or other services for fear of being reported to the Home Office.” Read more below.

Frontline migrant and BME domestic abuse organisations urge MPs to vote for equal access to safety for all victims

“The Government has recognised the challenges migrant women face when fleeing domestic abuse. However, the current Domestic Abuse Bill does not include any provisions to support them.” – ElizabethJiménez-Yáñez

MPs are being urged to vote for vital amendments to the Domestic Abuse Bill that would ensure migrant women victims of domestic abuse are offered support and safety that they are currently blocked from accessing, ahead of a debate in Parliament today.

Today, MPs will have one of the last opportunities to vote on further amendments to the legislation, as the Bill enters Report Stage.
